Founded by award-winning designer, Julie Termuende,
Emitini is one of the most respected interior design firms
on the Sunshine Coast.

Design shapes our experience of interior space to make our lives better, easier and more functional. Interior designers combine art and science to enhance the interior and sometimes the exterior of a space or building. Well designed spaces provide a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment to live in.

Interior designers plan, research, coordinate and manage projects with a multi-faceted approach that includes: conceptual development; space planning; site inspections; programming; communication with stakeholders; construction management; and execution of the design.

Julie Termuende, Emitini’s founding Interior Designer, provides her clients with unsurpassed professionalism and creativity. She represents her clients, listening to their wants and needs, and acts on their behalf.

Julie is originally from Zululand in Southern Africa, where the name ‘Emitini’, the Zulu word for the phrase ‘out of the woods’, was derived.

Julie travelled the world for five years, met and fell in love with her husband John on Hornby Island in 1989, settling in Canada in 1990.

Emitini. A love story.

The evolution of Emitini Interior Design is a similar love story: Julie’s experience developed her love of colour, of the technical challenges of building design and of helping people achieve beauty and function in their surroundings.

The availability and quality of incredible wood products in Canada makes for inspirational design — Julie loves to work with organic, natural products and this is easily accomplished in natural resource-rich BC. Julie has worked on LEEDS homes and enjoys the challenge of sourcing the right products.

Julie is also passionate about space, “I totally get space — when I walk into a room that is not functioning well it is usually due to poor space planning, I immediately want to correct that. You can have a fantastic house but if the space does not flow, it can really interfere with the design. I usually encourage clients to incorporate Barrier-Free elements in all aspects of their build as much as possible. This way they can grow old in their homes comfortably without having to think of moving at a later stage. This is also good for resale.’’

Julie employs a strong focus on lighting. She feels it is crucial to highlight the architectural elements of a building as well as all interior spaces. Form as well as function. Julie stays current with many new lighting options as the industry is forever changing.
